20 first lines

I followed a link from[info]fairmer to[info]dsudis for a 'meme' (yes -- I'm aware the word meme, in this gross misuse of the word to mean online tagging games, has in itself become a meme, but the use still rankles me for no apparent reason) to list the first lines of the last twenty stories you've written.  I have no idea anymore in which order the following were written, but below the cut are the first lines of the last twenty stories I've sold.  Below that, in case you've interest, is the corresponding list of the publications in which they appear / will appear.  The only reason for the order is the order of their folders in my "sold short fiction" file on my computer.

20 first lines of my 20 last sold stories:

1.  I'm so freaking excited I can hardly stand it.

2.  She watched him take one last drag, then flick his single stolen cigarette into the damp clumpy dirt and shove his fists deep into tight coverall pockets. *

3.  Elizabeth appeared on my twelfth birthday.

4.  My first visit to the Bone Merchant marked me a man; nobody I knew retained all the knuckles of both hands.

5.  His Majesty's necro-alchemist clutched the dead man's jaw with one hand and dug long, bony fingers into the cadaver's mouth.

6.  Matty Johnson swore as she pounded the control panel in a windmilling motion of frustration and rage, her fists and long red braids flying. *

7.  Dear Jack:  Well it looks like I'm not going to make it to the wedding after all.  For that, I really am sorry.

8.  Paloma stepped onto the simulation deck and closed her eyes as the generated breeze blew past her face, ruffling her sensory veil.

9.  In my dreams, I flew.

10.  Long after water became more valuable than human blood; long after oil became virtually useless; long after time ceased to have meaning for a dying planet's ordinary citizen; long, long after that, there lived a girl.

11.  The muscles of my legs were deteriorating under the burden of extended weightlessness.

12.  Ruby walked along Grail Street between Quest and Haven.

13.  You pull your crazy-ass cherry-red smoke-spouting Camaro up by me and you lean out the window, letter-jacketed elbow gripping the door.

14.  Yo, Heroboy; it's me, Tiffani.  S'up?  I hope you check your messages, because like well, I just do.

15.  When the largest volcano on Mars erupted, people of every nation on Earth watched the live satellite feed as plumes of fire and dust and the very stuff of the planet itself roiled into the Martian sky and filled its heavens.

16.  It came to me that I should run away from home taking nothing but myself and so I thought I would and so I did.

17.  The helicopter's thrumming vibrated through Sharon's body with teeth-rattling constancy.  She gripped the hand-hold and looked out the window at the seemingly endless undulating green jungle which had once been her husband.

18.   As a young woman, I'd had the privilege of attending the fledgling Orbital Space Academy.

19.  1986 was a good year for Lydia:  that's when punk rock finally reached Harvest Hill, and she finally had a place to go.
20.  For the last fifty miles of plodding across the rusty pebbled dunes of Mars, the Echo 3000 had dragged his limbs beneath the weight of failure.

That's both an impressive list and nice bunch of openers...I can't wait to read "The Butterfly Assassins"...

Nice list! And the list of pubs becomes more and more impressive.

My best ever opener was from a psych horror story which went to Demon Minds - due out in October: "I'm a gimp. I don't get out much." The rest are standard enough that they aren't worth playing around with.

If you listed them in a row, I bet patterns would emerge. It was actually a rather interesting exercise.

Wellllll, I'm not sure how much short fiction I'll be writing in the near future, so it's nice I had a good year.

Looking forward to your 20 lines! Let me know if you see any patterns emerge.

They're all good, but my favorite, I think, is #7. I also like #9 for its simplicity and the infinite storylines where this line might take the reader.

Interesting! And a clever analysis. If you ever do get your hands on a copy of Desolate Places, I hope you give "Flying Solo" a read. It's one of my favorites.

#9 has just sold as a reprint to a new online venue and should be appearing online in October.

Oo, number 3 got me wondering just what the rest of that story was.
